How to Improve Readability In Your Blogs So People Actually Read Them

Blogging

You can spend hours researching, writing, and optimizing a blog, but if it’s difficult to read, people won’t stick around. And that’s the sad truth.

Readability is about making your content effortless to consume. We never want to create friction for our audience, making it hard for them to understand our point quickly.

Better blog readability improves user experience, increases time on page, lowers bounce rates, and can indirectly support SEO.

So let’s talk about how to improve readability in your blogs.

What Does “Readability” Mean?

Readability is how easy your content is to scan and understand. We aren’t trying to get people to sit down and read a novel. We want to give them value that they can consume in just a few minutes (or sometimes seconds).

Most website visitors skim blogs before they commit to reading the whole thing. They want to get the gist, and if that’s enough, then they got what they came for. Or if they are intrigued, they’ll read the rest.

Why Blog Readability Matters

Even the most valuable information can be overlooked if it’s presented in a way that feels overwhelming. Making your blogs easier to scan and understand creates a better experience for both your readers and search engines.

Here’s why improving readability matters:

Readers decide within seconds whether to stay.

Listen, we’re all busy. At all times, we have 100 things running through our heads—following up with a client, what we’re gonna make for dinner, that blog we have to write, and when we’re gonna fit in a quick workout.

No one wants their time wasted. Readers decide within seconds whether your content is worth their time.

Better readability improves engagement.

You might think that by making your blogs skimmable, people will spend less time reading. And while that might be the case for some, the opposite is actually true.

When you make it easy to consume your content, people will spend more time on the page.

  • Seeing a huge block of text? Nope, gonna go back to search results and find something less overwhelming.
  • Seeing organized, engaging, and informative headers with bullet points, short sentences, and callouts? Something caught my eye, and I’m staying to read it.

And when people stay on your blog longer, they’re more likely to:

Readability indirectly supports SEO.

Google doesn’t rank content because of a readability score, but readable content creates positive user signals that Google considers.

All Google cares about is the user experience. If you provide the best one by providing relevant value and keeping people engaged, you’re more likely to get more clicks from search results.

Helps your content perform better in AI search.

AI tools are designed to identify and summarize content that is clear, well-organized, and easy to understand.

This is what makes it easier for AI to interpret your content accurately and use it as part of an answer:

  • Descriptive headings
  • Concise paragraphs
  • Logical formatting
  • Straightforward language

Readability alone won’t guarantee visibility in AI search, but it helps create the kind of high-quality, user-focused content that both AI tools and human readers prefer.

8 Signs Your Blog Is Difficult to Read

Before we get into how to improve readability, let’s see if your blog has a problem.

If your blog has:

  • Giant blocks of text
  • Paragraphs over 5–6 lines
  • Few or non-descriptive headings
  • Long sentences
  • Lots of jargon
  • Tiny font
  • No images
  • No white space

Then you have a readability issue. Readers are leaving quickly (also called your bounce rate in Google Analytics) because your content isn’t easy for them to consume.

Can AI-written blogs have poor readability?

Absolutely. While AI can produce readable content quickly, it’s not guaranteed to create a blog that’s engaging or easy to follow.

AI-generated drafts usually have:

  • Repetitive sentence structures
  • Overly wordy explanations
  • Generic transitions
  • Long paragraphs

And that makes the content feel robotic.

Reviewing and editing AI content for flow, formatting, and clarity is still essential if you want readers to stay engaged and trust your expertise.

10 Ways to Improve Readability in Your Blogs

Got a readability issue? Let’s fix it!

1. Write Shorter Paragraphs

And when I say short, I mean like 1-3 sentences. That’s what’s easy to skim. Space between paragraphs reduces overwhelm.

2. Use Clear Headings

Headings are the first thing people will skim before deciding to read the rest of the content.

3. Keep Sentences Concise

Remove unnecessary filler words. We aren’t trying to hit a word count like we were for high school essays.

  • Instead of: In order to; Use: To
  • Instead of: At this point in time; Use: Now

We’re trying to make it easy to read.

4. Use Simple Words Whenever Possible

You don’t need to use big words to sound smart. Clear and simple writing builds trust, and that’s way more important.

Examples:

  • Utilize → use
  • Commence → start
  • Facilitate → help

Note: The exception to this is if your audience uses more complex language. Always consider the reader first.

5. Break Up Information with Lists

Visually, we love bullet points and lists. It’s the fastest formatting for us to skim.

Lists are great for:

  • Steps
  • Examples
  • Checklists
  • Benefits
  • Mistakes

If you’re ever listing more than three steps in a sentence, convert it to a short list instead.

6. Add Bold Text Strategically

Bolding can be a great way to call out text you really want your readers to pay attention to. BUT it can be overused.

Bold things like:

7. Write Like You’re Talking to One Person

Even though we want thousands of people on our website, we should only be talking to one person.

Here’s how to do that:

8. Add Relevant Images

Images break up text beautifully, but they should be used strategically. I don’t usually like to use images just for the sake of it.

Instead, I go with:

  • Screenshots
  • Graphics
  • Charts

Things that add value AND break up the text.

9. Make Links Easy to Spot

It drives me crazy when designs don’t automatically underline links. As readers, we expect links to be underlined. In my mind, just because they’re a different color doesn’t mean it’s a link. An underline is necessary, if you ask me.

So if your design doesn’t automatically underline links and make them a different color, edit it.

10. Read Your Blog Out Loud

It’s so awkward and uncomfortable, but reading your blog out loud is the best way to catch mistakes. Because you wrote it and you know what you meant to say, your brain will fill in the gaps and skip mistakes.

But reading it out loud forces you to slow down and actually comprehend what the text is saying.

You’ll notice:

  • Awkward phrasing
  • Long sentences
  • Missing words
  • Repetition

Readability Tools Worth Using

I always run my blog through Grammarly before publishing it. It catches mistakes I missed while doing my own editing because again, your brain tricks you!

It also gives clarity suggestions to simplify and condense your point.

If your website is on WordPress, I also like to run a gut check through the plug-in Yoast SEO. It gives you a readability score that measures:

  • Transition words
  • Sentence length
  • Passive voice
  • Subheading distribution

These tools are helpful, but don’t follow every suggestion blindly. Your audience and message matter more than achieving a perfect score.

Great Blogs Are Easy to Read

Readability is all about removing friction so readers can focus on your message. Small formatting and writing changes can improve how people engage with your content.

And the more they find your content valuable, the more they come back to you as a trusted resource.

If your blog is easier to read than your competitors’, readers are more likely to stay, trust your expertise, and take the next step.
