What to Do When You’ve Run Out of Blog Post Ideas

Blogging

It’s not that you aren’t creative (I know you are!), but since we’re in the day-to-day of our businesses and the experts in what we know, it can be difficult to think of other things to write about.

You feel like you’ve written about everything, and you think there’s nothing else to say, but I guarantee there are other topics you haven’t considered.

That’s actually one of my favorite parts of working with new clients—showing them how many on-brand and relevant blog topics I can come up with that they’ve never thought of.

So if you’ve been wracking your brain, trying to think of new blog post ideas (especially if having no ideas is preventing you from publishing new posts!), here’s what to do.

What to do When You've Run out of Blog Post Ideas

1. Go Back to What’s Already Working

Your best ideas are usually hiding in your existing content. Look at your top-performing posts, and turn one post into multiple angles:

  • Beginner version
  • Advanced version
  • Mistakes to avoid
  • Case study or real-life example

Different search intentions can target different audiences.

The caveat here is to not cannibalize your own content—meaning don’t create two pieces of content that are too similar, or they’ll be competing against each other for traffic.

Here’s an example:

Blog that’s performing well:The Best and Worst Places to Find Clients for Your Online Business

New blog angle: Why Referrals are So Important for Your Business

Similar topics? Yes. But the new blog is narrowing in on referrals. I mention referrals in the existing blog, but the new one would go deeper into it as a marketing strategy.

This strategy for new blog post ideas also gives you an opportunity to internally link the two blogs, helping your SEO!

2. Use Your Client and Audience Questions

If someone has asked it once, others are searching for it.

Pull questions from emails, DMs, discovery calls, questionnaires, and comments. Write down the exact wording people use, and turn each question into a blog title.

This is how you create content that ranks and converts because you’re writing about things people actually want to know about.

3. Expand One Idea into a Cluster

Instead of chasing new topics, go deeper on one. This is similar to blog post idea #1, but instead of using an existing blog post, you’re thinking about broader topics.

Example:

  • Main topic: “SEO for small businesses.”
  • Spin-offs:
    • Long-tail keyword strategy
    • On-page SEO checklist
    • Blogging frequency for SEO
    • Why SEO still matters with AI
    • Common SEO mistakes

This proves your authority with search engines and readers.

4. Refresh and Reoptimize Old Posts

Not every post needs to be brand new! Review your old blog posts and see if you can update them:

  • Outdated stats, screenshots, data, or examples.
  • Improve headings and metadata.
  • Add new internal links.
  • Expand thin sections.
  • Reposition the CTA.

This strategy is faster and more effective than starting a new blog from scratch.

Here’s more about refreshing your blogs.

5. Look at Search Data (Not Just Brainstorming)

Take the guesswork out. Use tools like Google Search Console to find:

  • Queries you’re already showing up for
  • Posts ranking on page 2 (big opportunity to update and get on page 1!)

Use Ubersuggest or AnswerThePublic for question-based ideas (perfect for showing up in AI results!)

Let real data guide what you write next.

6. Repurpose Content from Other Platforms

You’re probably already sitting on ideas from what you send your email list or post on social media.

  • Turn Instagram captions into full blog posts.
  • Expand a newsletter into a blog (Wanna know a secret? That’s what I did for this blog!)
  • Break a blog into a series.

Content shouldn’t live in one place. Use it as much as you can!

7. Document, Don’t Just Create

Blogging started as a way to share experiences. Some of the best content is just sharing what you’re already doing.

  • A recent client win or lesson
  • Something you changed in your process
  • A mistake you made and fixed

This kind of content is more unique and genuine, and readers appreciate that. They want to read your perspective and experience!

8. Create an “Idea Bank”

There’s no need to start from zero every time.

  • Keep a running doc or note.
  • Add ideas weekly (even half-formed ones).
  • Organize by category or topic.

An idea bank helps you choose a topic you’ve already somewhat thought about, rather than staring at a blank Google Doc.

FAQs About New Blog Post Ideas

How do I know if a blog post idea is SEO-friendly?

A strong blog post idea has search volume and aligns with your offers. Use keyword research tools to validate interest, but prioritize topics that naturally connect to your services.

What’s the difference between a trending topic and an evergreen topic?

Trending topics are timely and can bring quick traffic, while evergreen topics stay relevant over time. A balanced blog strategy includes both for short-term wins and long-term growth.

Should I focus on what I want to write or what my audience needs?

Your audience always comes first! The best-performing blogs mix what your audience is searching for and what you’re knowledgeable about.

Do I need keyword research for every blog idea?

Usually yes. A quick search can confirm whether people are looking for your topic and help you phrase it in a way that matches how they search. The only time it doesn’t matter as much is when you 100% know your audience wants to know about a topic, and keyword research shows no one searches for that topic. Trust what your audience says over keyword research.
