Podcast Transcript vs. SEO Show Notes

Podcast Transcript vs. SEO Show Notes: What’s the Difference?

Blogging

Many podcasters assume publishing a podcast transcript is enough for SEO. They call it “show notes”, post on their website, and move on.

Others skip written content altogether, thinking podcast platforms handle discoverability. And while they do help with visibility, it’s native to their platform. So Spotify will share your podcast with other Spotify users, but that’s where it stops.

The reality is that most podcasters miss the mark when it comes to making the most of their content. You spend so much time brainstorming, planning, recording, editing, and publishing your podcast. I think it should do more than just sit on Spotify and hope for the best.

What if your podcast episodes could get shown on Google, giving you even more visibility for your podcast AND your website? That’s what SEO podcast show notes can do for you.

What Is a Podcast Transcript?

A podcast transcript is word-for-word, exactly what you said in your episode. All the ums and uhs and likes. All the rambling and tangents and examples.

You do need a podcast transcript available for hearing-impaired audiences, but it should NOT be posted on your website. Without significant editing, it does nothing for your SEO or audience.

No one wants to read a ginormous chunk of text with speaker labels and all the filler words you naturally use.

And search engines don’t find this type of content valuable. It won’t help your SEO because it’s not formatted for readers, search engines, or AI. And because it’s not considered valuable, it won’t be ranked in search results.

What Are SEO Podcast Show Notes?

SEO podcast show notes are strategically written blog posts that summarize your podcast episode while optimizing it for search engines.

Unlike transcripts, podcast show notes:

  • Focus on readers instead of listeners.
  • Organize information logically.
  • Naturally include target keywords.
  • Highlight the biggest takeaways.
  • Encourage listeners to play the episode.
  • Include internal links and calls to action.

Think of SEO show notes as a blog post inspired by your podcast, not a written copy of the conversation.

Quick Clarification

I’m NOT referring to the show notes you post on Spotify, which include a short description, a list of sponsors, and all the links you mention in your episode.

SEO show notes are long-form content repurposed from your podcast episode and posted as a blog on your website.

Podcast Transcript vs. SEO Show Notes: The Biggest Differences

Podcast TranscriptSEO Show Notes

Which Is Better for SEO?

As the name implies…. It’s SEO show notes. A transcript has all the information there, but SEO show notes organize and condense it to make it valuable to readers.

Google prioritizes pages that:

Transcripts struggle with this because of:

  • Rambling conversations
  • Topic drift
  • Lack of structure
  • Duplicate filler language
  • Poor readability

SEO show notes always perform better than transcripts, even slightly edited transcripts. You can’t just add some headers, remove the filler words, and call it good.

SEO show notes are strategically written, just like a blog post.

They:

  • Target one primary keyword
  • Use related secondary keywords
  • Include optimized headings
  • Answer related questions
  • Encourage longer time on page
  • Provide a better experience for both readers and search engines

Should You Publish Both?

You need both, but you’re only publishing SEO show notes. Transcripts stay inside your podcast hosting platform for accessibility reasons. SEO show notes go on your website to get shown in search results and attract more listeners.

What Should SEO Podcast Show Notes Include?

SEO podcast show notes are outlined just like a blog because they’re serving several purposes:

  • Giving additional information and value to your listeners
  • Attracting new listeners from search engines
  • Improving your website SEO

Here’s what your SEO podcast show notes need to be optimized for search engines:

Think of it like you’re repurposing your podcast into a blog post. That‘s what SEO show notes are.

Can AI Create Podcast Show Notes?

I meant technically, AI can do it. But the same rules apply as AI writing blog posts. It 100% needs a human to strategize, research, heavily edit, and publish and should never be copy/pasted on your website.

AI can be a starting point—like highlighting key points or offering ideas for extra value to add to the blog post—but someone needs to optimize the content for SEO performance and reader engagement.

How SEO Show Notes Support Your Overall Content Strategy

Each podcast episode is an opportunity to repurpose content. I always say that long-form content is the easiest to repurpose, and it usually starts with a podcast, blog, or YouTube video.

Each podcast episode can become multiple pieces of content:

  • SEO blog post
  • Newsletter
  • Pinterest pin
  • LinkedIn article
  • Instagram carousel
  • Short-form video script
  • FAQ page
  • Resource library entry

Show notes become the foundation for a broader content marketing strategy, helping you get more value from every episode you publish.

How Long Should SEO Podcast Show Notes Be?

The ideal length depends on the topic, but quality matters more than word count. Aim for enough detail to summarize the episode, answer related questions, include relevant keywords naturally, and provide actionable value.

Since we’re thinking of SEO show notes as a blog post, it will likely be 800-1,500 words.

Does This Really Matter?

Take it from my client Wendy. Wendy educates people about living toxin-free through her podcast. I repurpose her podcast episodes into SEO show notes and post them on her website.

Her website has seen amazing growth since we started.

And this matters because she primarily makes money through affiliate sales. She NEEDS people to visit her website in order to make money. Her podcast has a few sponsorships, and she mentions her affiliates, but her website is where most people convert.

This applies to service providers, too. You need people to visit your website to learn more about your service packages and inquire.

If you’re a business owner who makes money from your website, your podcast needs to drive people to it.

Your Podcast Deserves More Than a Transcript

A podcast transcript captures everything you said. SEO show notes communicate why it matters.

While transcripts support accessibility and documentation, SEO show notes are designed to attract new visitors, answer search queries, and encourage listeners to continue engaging with you.

By treating each podcast episode as an opportunity to create optimized, evergreen content, you can extend its reach far beyond the day it goes live and build a stronger library of searchable resources over time.
