Expectations with blogging

Do You Have Unrealistic Blog Expectations?

Blogging

You started blogging, hoping that it would bring in all this traffic like you were promised. But months later, you still aren’t seeing the kind of growth you were expecting.

The reality is that results take time, strategy, and consistency. It’s important to have realistic blog expectations before you dive in.

So let me realign your expectations before you end up disappointed.

seo blog expectations

1. Traffic growth takes time.

Blog traffic doesn’t spike overnight. It often takes 3–6 months (or longer) for posts to gain visibility and traction.

Google has to find, index, and rank the post, THEN it can start earning traffic from search engines. This process can take time.

The good news is that results compound over time, so the effort you put in now will pay off for a long time.

2. Not every post will be a top performer.

Some blogs may drive significant traffic and leads, while others serve as supporting content for internal linking, to build brand authority, or to address specific niche questions.

It’s completely okay to write a blog that doesn’t target a high-volume keyword if you KNOW your audience wants to learn about that topic. A blog with low search volume can still be incredibly valuable if it speaks directly to ideal clients and helps them make a decision.

It’s more important to write for your audience than for search engines.

3. Consistency matters more than intensity.

Publishing one great blog every month or two consistently is more effective than posting five blogs one month and disappearing for the next three. Create a blog schedule that works for you and stick with it.

This quiz can help you decide the best schedule for your growth goals.

4. SEO results compound over time.

Blogging is a long-term strategy. The value often comes from the cumulative effect of multiple posts ranking and supporting one another.

5. Older content may outperform new content.

Often, your best-performing blogs are not the newest ones. One blog will get a little traffic within a few months of posting. Then it will grow and grow over time, making it more valuable SEO-wise the longer it’s been published.

Google trusts older but up-to-date blogs more than brand-new content. Older posts can continue to gain momentum months or years after publication. But that’s also why it’s important to keep your older blogs up-to-date.

6. Leads may not come directly from blog readers.

A visitor may read a blog today, follow you on social media later, download a freebie and get on your email list, and inquire weeks after that.

The customer journey is rarely Google ➡️ Blog ➡️ Inquire ➡️ Client.

That’s why it’s sometimes more beneficial to have a lower-ticket offer as your CTA in blogs. It’s not as much of an ask for them to download a freebie as it is to inquire about your services.

7. Blogs support more than just SEO.

Blogs can be repurposed into tons of other content:

  • Emails
  • YouTube videos
  • Podcasts
  • Social media

Blogging can also help with thought leadership by showing you’re an expert in your industry. And they help nurture warm leads who may just need a little more information before inquiring.

Blogs do a lot more than just bring people to your website from search engines.

8. Content updates are part of the process.

Successful blogging includes refreshing older posts, improving headlines, updating keywords, and strengthening CTAs.

Sorry, but you can’t just post and ghost.

Because remember, traffic and results compound. You’d hate for someone to be introduced to your business by clicking on a blog you wrote five years ago that still references how everything is moving online because of the Pandemic.

Like yeah, we know.

Make sure that no matter which blog someone reads first, it’s accurate and up-to-date.

Need help doing that? My blog update service goes back through your old blogs and brings them back to life.

9. Ranking #1 is not guaranteed.

Even well-written, optimized content may rank on page one without holding the top spot, especially in competitive industries. Ranking #1 or even on page 1 isn’t guaranteed.

And honestly, it doesn’t matter as much as you think. What’s more important is providing value to your audience. That’s how you’ll:

  • Earn trust with readers.
  • Get top spots in search engines.
  • Be mentioned in AI answers.

Value is way more important than rankings.

10. Conversions depend on strategy, not just traffic.

High traffic does not automatically equal high conversions. Strong CTAs, clear offers, and aligned messaging are what turn readers into leads. And it’s up to you to sell them once they get on a discovery call!

11. Audience trust builds gradually.

Blogging helps people get to know your expertise over time. Trust is usually built through repeated exposure to helpful content. It’s unlikely that someone will inquire after reading just one blog post. They want to know that you know what you’re talking about first!
