What Happens When You Stop Blogging for 6 Months

What Happens When You Stop Blogging for 6 Months?

Blogging

Lots of business owners start blogging with good intentions. They make a content plan, write some posts, publish consistently for a while, and then put it on the back burner when client work and life get busy.

I’m all about setting your priorities and boundaries when it comes to your work-life balance. So if you need to take a break from blogging, I’m not here to tell you no.

I just want to prepare you for what might happen if you stop blogging or take an extended break from publishing new content.

You might decide it’s worth it to continue publishing new blogs, give something else up that’s overwhelming, or hire a blog writer to help you sustain your growth.

Whatever you decide, it will be the right choice for you!

Does Stopping Your Blog Really Matter?

The short answer… Yes.

Search engines favor websites that are active, relevant, and continually provide value to users.

When you stop publishing new blog content, you stop creating opportunities to:

  • Rank for new keywords
  • Attract organic traffic
  • Earn backlinks
  • Build authority in your industry
  • Nurture potential customers

Your existing content will still be putting in the work for you, but its performance can gradually decline.

All the time, search engines come across websites with dozens of blogs that haven’t been touched in months or even years.

This is a signal that there is probably another website that has more recent content to share with its users, and that’s the one that’ll be shown in search results.

Month 1–2: Things May Look Fine at First

Your existing content continues working for you. We know results compound over time, so you might not notice much change because your existing blogs are still bringing in traffic.

The problem is that this leads to a false sense of security. You might start to think that you’ve done all the blogging that you need to do and that it will sustain your growth forever.

That’s just not true. You need new content to continue growing.

You won’t get penalized directly for reducing how much you post, but behind the scenes, your growth is stalling.

You are no longer:

  • Expanding how many keywords you rank for
  • Creating new ways for people to discover your website
  • Demonstrating ongoing and relevant expertise
  • Giving search engines new content to index

And over time, it begins to show in your analytics.

Month 3–4: SEO Growth Begins to Plateau

One of the biggest benefits of blogging is that every new blog creates opportunities to rank in new search results, giving you visibility to new audiences.

When you stop publishing new blogs, new keyword rankings slow down, and your organic growth stalls.

Over time, your competitors will likely start outranking you simply because they keep producing relevant content while your site stays unchanged.

Search engines notice these signals, and they’re more likely to give visibility to websites that are active and relevant.

Month 4–5: Traffic May Begin Declining

Depending on what you write, your content might start to look a little dated. Maybe you have outdated statistics or references, or a new best practice has started, and you’re still talking about the old one.

Even evergreen content can become less relevant over time, especially if you’re talking about SEO or AI, because that seems to change by the minute!

Without updates, blog posts can:

  • Lose freshness
  • Contains outdated information
  • Miss current search intent
  • Become less competitive

As this happens, rankings will usually decrease because you’re no longer the most valuable or relevant resource.

You won’t see a drastic drop (probably), but you might notice:

  • Gradual traffic declines
  • Reduced impressions in search results
  • Lower click-through rates
  • Fewer pages ranking on page one

These small losses compound over time, just like your organic growth compounds over time if you stay consistent with blogging.

Month 5–6: Lead Generation Opportunities Decrease

With lower search visibility, you get fewer visitors to your website, which means fewer inquiries about your services.

Maybe you stopped blogging because you’re SO busy with client work that you don’t have time to market your own business.

I mean, being busy with client work is the goal, right?

Yes… Until a project ends or a client doesn’t renew a contract, you’re stuck floundering about where your next client will come from.

If you had stuck with blogging that whole time, you could have had a waitlist to fall back on or someone you could easily follow up with and book.

I know it’s hard to think about your own business when you’re super busy, but marketing is the only way to continue your success, whatever that looks like to you.

What Happens to Your…

…SEO Rankings?

Some rankings will stay, and others will disappear.

High-quality content can continue ranking for years, especially if:

  • The topic is evergreen.
  • Competition is low.
  • The article remains accurate (ahem, blog updates!)
  • The page has strong backlinks.

This is why blogging creates long-term value.

But without new content or regular updates, you’ll probably notice:

  • Rankings slip.
  • Competitors are overtaking you in search results.
  • Search visibility is shrinking.
  • Organic traffic growth is stagnating.

The longer the gap, the more noticeable the impact can become. And we know how hard it is to regain that trust and authority, don’t we?

…Domain Authority?

If you stop blogging, your authority will most likely take a hit.

Consistent blogging contributes to domain authority by helping you:

  • Cover more topics
  • Earn backlinks
  • Demonstrate expertise
  • Build topical relevance

When blog writing stops, so do authority-building opportunities.

If competitors continue publishing content while your site is inactive, their authority will grow faster than yours.

What Happens When You Start Blogging Again?

Ready for some good news? Recovery is possible—it just might be more difficult than it would be to just continue posting new content, even if it’s only once a month.

Once you start blogging again, you can begin rebuilding momentum through:

In many cases, businesses see traffic begin growing again after returning to a consistent publishing schedule.

Blogging Is a Long-Term Investment

Stopping your blog for six months probably won’t cause your website to disappear from search results overnight. However, growth slows, rankings can decline, and valuable opportunities to attract new clients are lost.

The businesses that see the strongest long-term SEO results aren’t necessarily publishing the most content, but they are publishing consistently.

Even a conservative blogging schedule can help maintain visibility, build authority, and keep organic traffic moving in the right direction.

And if blogging just isn’t in the cards for you right now, but you don’t want to see these consequences from not blogging, let’s chat. My blog writing services give you everything you need to maintain your sanity while improving your search rankings.

FAQs About Taking a Break From Blogging

How long can I stop blogging before it affects SEO?

Many websites won’t notice major changes in the first few months. However, after 3 to 6 months, growth often plateaus, and you might see your rankings decline.

Is it better to update old blog posts or write new ones?

Ideally, both! Updating existing content can improve rankings quickly, while new content helps expand your keyword reach and attract new audiences.

How often should a small business blog?

The best schedule is one you can maintain consistently. Publishing one to four high-quality blog posts per month provides a strong balance between SEO growth and sustainability.
