Are you someone who embraces change or actively avoids it at all costs? I think I’m a little bit of both. I clearly didn’t avoid change when I relaunched my entire business in 2024 (more on that later). But I also don’t really like change. I mean, when you’re comfortable, why mix things up? I’ll tell ya why. Change is good for your business growth. If things never change, if you never do anything differently than you are now, how can you expect to grow?
Throughout 2023, I felt like I was outgrowing my business. I had invested in professional development and added new services but didn’t increase my prices to match my new expertise. I was starting to get burned out and frustrated that my specialty was in blog writing and SEO, but I was still being hired as a VA (that’s what I marketed myself as when I started my business in 2020). I felt like I was holding back.
So at the end of 2023, I decided to completely overhaul my business. I believe God gave me the idea for my new business when I was on a walk one day. I was just overcome with excitement and it felt like I had some direction. I went home, wrote most of a business plan, and started thinking about next steps.
I hired a web designer and branding expert. I bought BTL Copy’s website copywriting course to write my new website copy. I decided on my new services and packages. I started thinking about how to tell clients of the change.
Change is good, but change can be a lot. My business completely started over with a new name, website, branding, services, and clients (actually, some clients moved over to the new business with me, which I am so grateful for!).
There are things I wish I did differently in my first year of business, but I wouldn’t be in this place today. I felt confident that this was what I was supposed to do. I outgrew my old business model, and now I have a business that aligns with my expertise and what my clients need help with to grow their businesses.
Even if you don’t like change, you have to admit that there are some benefits to making changes in your business. Benefits such as…
Change fosters creativity and innovation. When you have to solve a problem, you think more creatively. You think of new ideas. If you see an opportunity to help your audience solve another problem, wouldn’t you do it? Change can be as simple as doing something new.
As you test your ‘change muscle,’ you learn to be more resilient and flexible in your business. You can quickly respond to things happening in the industry, world, or your own business so you don’t flounder, but thrive in the change.
Who doesn’t want to be more efficient and productive? As you learn and grow in your business and as a business owner, you learn how to streamline your operations and workflows. You can change outdated or manual processes to focus on the things you actually want to do as an entrepreneur – serve your clients!
Business owners who believe change is good aren’t afraid to take risks, and entrepreneurship is all about taking risks and making changes. They see change as an opportunity, not a threat. And this can apply to anything in your business.
One example that comes to mind for me is when AI was made public. I was originally threatened by it (hello, blog writer, here), but I eventually saw it as an opportunity to better serve my clients. It could help me write outlines and research information (can’t be an expert in everything!). I never use it to write blogs for me, but it saves time in the planning and research stages of blog writing.
You don’t have to dive fully into change like I did when relaunching my business. Start small and test changes in your business. Maybe you want to launch a new offering. Or start email marketing. Or create a new freebie. Or add a team member. Or try short-form videos on Instagram. Change doesn’t have to be drastic. It can be small, meaningful steps to help you grow your business.
Something that helped me embrace change… Actually, let me pause for a second. I wouldn’t say I’m good at embracing change. I love feeling comfortable and confident in what I’m doing. But I do think that change is good because it brings you outside of your comfort zone. And even in your personal life, getting out of your comfort zone benefits you in so many ways. So, although change isn’t comfortable, I try to embrace it.
So anyway… Something that helped me embrace change is continuous learning. I try to be smart with my business investments and purchase things I know I’ll actually use and learn from. Two of the best online courses I’ve taken are SEO on Tap and Site Series. They taught me so much and opened my eyes to new things. AKA, what I learned brought positive change into my business. I encourage you to find resources to teach you something new and see how it impacts your business!
Change can be a positive thing for your business. I know it’s hard to embrace change, but it’s the only way to develop your business and grow as a person. Adopt the mindset that change is good, and you’re bound to see business growth in the next year!
