When I first started my business, I offered virtual assistant services, including email marketing. I would write, design, and schedule weekly emails for my clients. I’ve used SO many email marketing tools, it’s not even funny. From HubSpot and MailChimp to AWeber and Constant Contact, I’ve had my hands in them all. And I have to say that once I learned how to use Flodesk, I’ll never go back to those other tools.

How to Use Flodesk for Email Marketing

I only have the email marketing Flodesk plan, so I won’t touch on the e-commerce side today. I want to share how I use Flodesk to grow my business.

Audience Segmentation

First, I need to talk about the importance of segmenting your audience. Segmentation is basically a list of subscribers who have performed a certain action. Organizing them this way allows you to send highly targeted messages, which we know tend to perform better because they’re more relevant.

  • Import list: I moved from Mailchimp to Flodesk when I relaunched and rebranded my business in 2024. I kept these people separate from my main list until they agreed to resubscribe under my new business.

You can also create segmentation lists for people who click a specific link in your workflow emails or have low engagement with your emails. There are a lot of possibilities!

Weekly Emails

When I was first learning how to use Flodesk, I started by building a template for my weekly newsletters. My template has all my branding and sections ready to go. It’s super easy to clone and fill in with that week’s content.

I found the builder really easy to use. You can add blocks for text, images, buttons, videos, and more. Once you add the block, you can use a template or fill it in with your own content and design. 

There are so many design options in Flodesk. There’s no chance your emails will look like anyone else’s! (Unless you copy them, but like, don’t?!)

Forms

You can also build forms right in Flodesk! I have a few different types of forms for freebies and my general email sign-up. Most are embedded on my website, like this. It makes the sign-up process seamless. I have one with its own landing page, and I use this on social media to promote my email list. 

Building forms in Flodesk is super simple. I started with a template from Flodesk, edited the form fields, updated my branding, and changed some settings. Then, you can choose the segment to add someone to when they complete the form. 

Automated Workflows

The automated workflows are perfect for freebie downloads. I have everything set up on the backend, so when someone submits their information to download a freebie, they’re added to that segmentation list. When they’re added to the list, they get added to the workflow, which lasts about a week.

My workflow emails give a little more information about me, my business, and my offerings, as well as some tips related to the freebie they downloaded. And, of course, the first email has their freebie! They get a brief introduction to me and my business before they start to receive my newsletters. It helps me set some expectations and show the value I can bring.

I love that this entire process is automated. They’re getting nurtured 24/7, and I don’t have to remember to do anything. I highly recommend utilizing workflows!
