Keywords are the foundation of an SEO strategy. It’s how you tell Google what search results to list your website. There are a lot of SEO tools out there, but my favorite is Ubersuggest. To improve your SEO strategy and drive more organic traffic, you need to learn how to use Ubersuggest for effective keyword research.
Lucky for you, I’m going to show you exactly how I use Ubersuggest for keyword research. I do this almost every day for my blog writing clients. I’m constantly on the lookout for a good keyword to target. Even if you’re an SEO beginner, you can learn how to use Ubersuggest to perform keyword research.
Keyword research is a foundational piece of your SEO strategy. Before you publish, or honestly write, any page for your website, you should do keyword research first. By having a target keyword in mind first, you can make sure it’s in all the right places to optimize the page well.
Plus, it’s helpful to do keyword research before writing because you might find your audience phrases something differently than you. If I call myself a ‘blog writer’ on my website but my target audience calls me an ‘SEO content writer’, I’m not attracting the right audience. I want to target keywords that a lot of people in my audience use, even if I wouldn’t say it that way. You’re speaking directly to your target audience by using this strategy.
Keyword research helps you drive organic traffic. People use phrases to search on Google (duh, yes, I know you know this.) Search engines only show content relevant to those keywords people search. Otherwise, you’d be getting pet grooming websites when you searched for web designers. Annoying. Keywords on your website tell Google when it’s appropriate to show your website in search results so you can earn more new, organic traffic.
I learned how to perform keyword research and a ton of other SEO strategies in SEO on Tap with Duo Collective. Highly recommend their course!
Ubersuggest is a tool developed by Neil Patel, a digital marketer focused on the search and SEO space. It was created to help businesses find relevant keywords and track their own SEO as well as competitors.
Ubersuggest is my preferred tool for keyword research. The interface is easy to use and I like the way the data is shown. It makes everything easy to understand. It even monitors your website and gives you custom SEO recommendations to improve your website and its position in search results. If you’re looking to optimize your content, knowing how to use Ubersuggest can give you valuable insights into trending keywords and content ideas.
I paid the one-time fee to gain access to the business plan. A one-time payment for lifetime access?! Sign me up. If you aren’t doing a ton of keyword research like I do, the free version gives you a few searches per day, which should suffice. It’s been a great business investment (unlike these ones 😅)
Once you decide on the plan you’d like, sign up! Then we’ll walk through the interface together. Remember, I have a business plan; if you sign up for something different, your interface or access to features may be slightly different.
Your dashboard shows an overview of how your website is performing on search engines. It gives you SEO opportunities to improve your rankings. You’ll also see your organic traffic, keyword rankings, backlinks, and on-page SEO score. I like to see the SEO opportunities Ubersuggest suggests to improve my website. I often make these changes or fix errors they find!
Keyword overview allows you to type in a keyword or a website to see analytics. I mostly use this section to search my client’s website or competitors. Once you enter a website in this section, you’ll see the traffic overview of the website, including monthly organic traffic, SEO keyword rankings, top SEO pages, and SEO keywords the website ranks for. I use this information in my client reports.
The keyword ideas section looks very similar to the keyword overview section, but now you can enter up to three keywords to analyze together. This is where I do all my keyword research. So let’s talk about EXACTLY how I do that.
I’m giving you a step-by-step guide on how to use Ubersuggest to perform keyword research for blogging. With a little practice, you’ll be able to find the best keywords for your website!
I start with a blog topic idea I want to write about. My list of ideas lives in my Airtable content calendar, which you can get for free right here! I look to see what topic I have planned and do keyword research before I start writing.
Let’s use the topic of how Pinterest and blogging work together as an example. In the keyword ideas tab, I’ll enter a few keywords related to my topic and review the analytics.
You can see that only one keyword I entered has search volume – ‘Pinterest and blogging’. Hmm… that’s an okay keyword, but let’s see what other keywords Ubersuggest gives me related to these three.
P.S. Zero-volume keywords are okay to use sometimes. It might mean the term is so niche that it gets less than 1 search per month. But there are scenarios where those make sense to use.
Okay, some of these aren’t relevant to what I want to talk about, like ‘blogging for profit’ or ‘Pinterest and YouTube’. But ‘Pinterest blogging’ looks pretty good. It’s relevant to my blog topic and it has a higher volume and less competition than my original search ‘Pinterest and blogging’. More searches every month and fewer people targeting it? This is the keyword I would choose to target in my blog.
See how I phrased my keyword one way but using a slightly different term resulted in 270 more searches per month? I would rather write for that keyword when it means basically the same thing as the one I entered.
I always recommend Ubersuggest for keyword research. Its interface is easy to understand and it gives you all the tools you need to be successful on the search front.
