My Entrepreneur Story

My Entrepreneur Story: How I Got to Where I Am Now

Entrepreneurship

I’ve touched on my entrepreneur story here and there, but I want to give you an inside look into my journey. It’s been full of ups and downs, and it hasn’t been perfect or easy. I hope it shows you that no matter where you are, you’re exactly where you should be.

First Impressions of Entrepreneurship

In college, I studied business with a concentration in marketing. There was also an entrepreneurship concentration, and I always thought that meant owning a brick-and-mortar business. I was NOT interested in that AT ALL, but I believed that was the only option.

Until I graduated in 2018, got a corporate job, and saw an ad for Bucketlist Bombshells courses teaching you how to work remotely and travel the world. And that, I was totally down for. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. I followed them and continued to see ads for their courses.

Learning the Basics

Two years later, COVID hit. It’s hard to believe the world actually shut down, and we had to wear masks everywhere we went. That feels like a lifetime ago.

I was still working my corporate job but received a government stimulus check. Fortunately, I didn’t need it to pay my bills, so I decided to invest in myself and spend it on the Bucketlist Bombshells courses—the same ones I’ve been seeing for two years. I always thought working remotely and traveling the world was the dream.

I was also bored as heck at home all day long so I decided to be productive with my time and hopefully make a little money on the side. My entrepreneur story literally started in my bedroom with my laptop!

I started taking the courses and learned all about marketable skills, how to set up your business, build a website, market yourself, find clients, and travel remotely. It taught me everything I needed to know. Unfortunately, I don’t believe they offer these courses anymore!

Starting My Business in 2020

I worked my way through the courses, and about three months later, I had my brand name, branding, website, and offers. I decided to offer general marketing virtual assistant services. I had a marketing background and could do a lot of different things. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do long-term, so I decided to do it all until I figured it out. This included:

  • Social media marketing
  • Blog writing
  • Email marketing
  • Landing page design
  • General admin work

It was a lot, but I’m glad I did it that way. I experienced what it was like to offer all these services and the work that went into them. It eventually helped me narrow my offerings to just blog writing and SEO

I booked my first client from a Facebook group, and I remember the day she signed my contract. I was watching my friend’s dog at her house. I saw the email come in and literally screamed, probably scaring the crap out of the dog! I was working on cleaning up her website, adding new blog posts, and general admin tasks.

From there, I got more and more confidence and clarity in how I work. I started booking more clients from Facebook groups and referrals. Word of mouth is still one of the biggest ways I get new clients!

My Idea for Rebranding

I rode that wave for a few years. Over time, I adjusted my offerings and how I charged clients as I learned new strategies and systems. In 2023, I started to feel like my business wasn’t aligned with what I wanted it to look like anymore. I had been introduced to other business owners I admired and wanted my business to run as smoothly and efficiently as theirs.

I was on a walk one day when this idea hit me: What if I completely relaunched my entire business and only offered the services I wanted to offer? I practically ran home and wrote an entire business plan. I truly believe God gave me this idea and pushed me to make it happen.

Relaunching and Rebranding

The first thing I did was purchase BTL Copy’s copywriting course. I have good writing skills, but website copy is a different beast. I wanted to learn the strategy behind it to make sure my new website and brand attracted the right audience.

I worked through that course for a few months and had my website copy written. Then, I hired a web designer and branding expert to help with the visual aspect. At this point, I understood my strengths and weaknesses and knew someone else would be better at this than I would be. The person I hired was a current client, so it was an easy decision for me to work with her! The process was super smooth, and I was so happy with the results.

To prepare for my relaunch, I emailed all my current clients to inform them of the change. All of them were impacted by it due to my service and pricing changes. I was expecting maybe one or two to move over to the new business with me, but half ended up coming over! I was really nervous about this part, but I’m so lucky to have loyal clients who believe in me!

I also wrote a few blogs to have ready on the new website, scheduled social post announcements, and went live on my stories. I probably could have done better with the promotion aspect! But, I think I did well in marketing my new business. I decided to go all in with my marketing, which included:

  • Weekly blog posts
  • Weekly emails
  • 5 days/week posting on Instagram

This was a LOT for me, but I knew I needed to be aggressive with my marketing to regain the traffic I lost from switching website domains. I’m happy to say that I’ve kept up with that content schedule for a year now, but I’ll probably be changing it soon.

Where I’m at Now

People think it’s interesting that I decided to niche down to only blog writing and SEO. Usually, businesses niche from an industry perspective rather than their services.

I’m so happy that I decided to only offer these services. I’m happier with my work, feel more confident in my expertise, and am working with aligned clients. If you’re feeling stuck in your business, don’t forget that you created this business to do what you want to do! If it doesn’t feel right anymore, change it! I’m so happy I did!

Goals For My Business

All that to say, I’m still always learning and growing. Of course, I have some regrets about my entrepreneur story, but I wouldn’t be where I am today without going through all those trials and errors. I literally just signed up for a three-month coaching program because there are still things I want to change and improve within my business. But I think that’s a healthy approach to entrepreneurship. We’re never perfect or done improving.

This is what I’m hoping to change in my business:

  • Adjust my offerings: I launched with a few blog writing services and have found that one doesn’t resonate with my audience, and I’m missing a big one that does.
  • More strategic with marketing: I’m burnt out on social media and hardly see any return on my efforts. I want to adjust my strategy, so it feels good and is worth it!
  • Tighten up my systems: They are already 100% better than before the relaunch, but some holes still need to be filled.

Thank you for reading my entrepreneur story! I hope it gives you some comfort that everyone has ups and downs and no one’s business or story is perfect. We’re all a work in progress, but we are out here doing our best!
