How to Repurpose Content to Maximize Your Time and Energy

Entrepreneurship

Since becoming a business owner, I’ve learned how to repurpose my content across platforms, and let me tell you – it’s a game-changer. It’s saved me so much time and energy. I used to marvel at how these big businesses produce so much content and recently figured out that they repurpose a lot of what they create. I wanted to share my findings and different ways to repurpose content to maximize your time and energy.

What is Repurposing Content?

Repurposing content is the process of taking one piece of created content and using it in different ways. Typically, people start with a video, blog, or podcast. The one they pick depends on their comfort level. Some people hate being on video, don’t think they are good writers or don’t like the sound of their voice. Choose to start with the one you’re most comfortable with. Whichever you decide to start with, you can then use it to create pieces of content that can be used in other ways.

How to Repurpose Content

For the purpose of this blog, I’m going to walk you through an example of starting with a YouTube video. Video content is the best to repurpose because you can transcribe it into a blog and use the audio in a podcast, so you hit all three major platforms. Here are a few of the top ways you can repurpose a video.

BLOG

Once your video is on YouTube, you can easily transcribe it into a blog. YouTube even gives you the transcription! You can find the YouTube transcription by going to the video > three horizontal dots along video navigation > open transcript. Copy the text and paste it into Grammarly. That’s what I like to do because Grammarly offers spelling and grammar advice. It also catches mistakes that you may not be aware of. You will need to remove extra words and create paragraphs to make it flow as a blog, but that’s much easier than sitting down and writing one!

Extra Tip – When you open the transcription in YouTube, it automatically shows the timestamps. They can be a pain to edit out! To remove them before copying the text, click on the three vertical dots > toggle time stamps.

PODCAST

This is one of the top ways to repurpose a video because all you need to do is remove the visual element. I do this through the tool, Camtasia. Once I upload the video into the user-friendly desktop app, I separate the audio and the video. I edit the audio as needed, then I download the audio into an MP4 file, and it’s ready to upload as a podcast!

If you want to start with a podcast instead of a video, record yourself filming and use that as a YouTube video. It’s all about accommodating how your audience prefers to consume content. There are several creative ways to go about it.

SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS

Repurposing to social media posts is one of my favorites because the possibilities are endless. You just need to create graphics and pull a few sentences from the video or blog. Here are a few ways to repurpose a video into social posts:

  • Tease the video
  • Announce the published blog
  • Announce the new podcast
  • Use a short snippet of the video
  • Create a list from the points made in the video
  • Post a quote from the video
  • Create an Instagram reel
  • Share Instagram posts as stories

All that content from one video! You’ll spend much less time writing captions and thinking of ideas of what to post on social media. I know that can be a struggle sometimes. Repurposing content is a great way to drive traffic to your website or other platforms and stay active and consistent on social media. You’ll love the growth you will see!

Extra Tip – Save even more time by batching your social media content. Create a month’s worth of content in one or two days and schedule it to send. I use Sendible, and the features are amazing! If you want to try Sendible, use my link and save 20% when you become a customer!

PINTEREST

I’ve just started dipping my toes into using Pinterest as a business owner, but let me tell you – it’s an incredibly powerful tool. The best thing about Pinterest is that it’s a search engine more than a social platform. That means your pins have a significantly longer lifespan than any other platform. You can repurpose your original video in ways similar to social media. However, on Pinterest, you can post about the same thing but use different images. So, for that original video, you could create five pins using five different graphics and the same link and description across all five. You can do the same for the blog and podcast when you create those. That’s 15 pins from one piece of content!

A Warning

Don’t overuse content. Your audience will get tired of seeing the same thing over and over. Repurposing content is great, but you still need to create new pieces of content. Intermix topics from different original pieces of content to keep your audience engaged. If you post one video a week on YouTube, spread out the social posts, pins, podcast, and blog to post on different dates throughout the month. Then, mix in pieces of content from the next video you film.

The power of repurposing content is incredible. One piece of content, whether that’s a video, blog, or podcast, can turn into so many different things. I encourage you to try repurposing your current content and create a strategy to create less content but use it in many ways. See how much time and energy you save by doing so.
