Content buckets are broad categories to help you organize your blog content. They streamline your content creation process, ensuring a diverse range of topics that align with your brand’s goals and your audience’s interests.
Do you know what your blog content buckets are? This article will help you identify yours and adjust your blog content if needed. I’ll cover how content buckets improve your SEO, four steps to identify your content buckets, and some FAQs.
Blog content buckets, also known as blog categories, are how you group your blogs. They are broad themes that help you categorize your blog content. They act as a framework for your content strategy, guiding what you should write about and ensuring a balanced mix of topics.
The purpose of content categories is to:
Content buckets make it easier to plan your blog content calendar by ensuring a mix of different topics. You don’t want to write about the same thing all the time – your audience will get bored! The categorization of your blogs helps you write on various topics related to your business.
Did you know that your content buckets will improve your SEO? By identifying your blog categories on your website, you can optimize those category pages with targeted keywords. So your blog category pages have a chance to rank higher in search results, the same as your individual blog posts.
Regularly producing content on specific topics helps establish your authority in those areas. You’re telling search engines the topics and categories you’re an expert in.
They also improve user experience. By categorizing your content, you’re helping people find what they need faster. Search engines love to see that!
Need help identifying your blog categories? Follow these four steps to get started.
Understand the needs, preferences, and pain points of your audience. What topics do you need to educate them on and what are they interested in learning more about?
Determine what you want to achieve with your content. For service providers, the goal of blogs is to nurture your audience to the point of taking action to inquire about your services. For e-commerce, you probably want to sell your online products. Your goals will help you determine the optimal content buckets.
If you already have an active blog, this step will be super easy. Review your existing content and note any patterns to the topics you write about. List all your current blog posts and categorize them by topic. You might end up with 20 topics but from there, you can broaden them to fit just a few main categories.
If you don’t have a blog yet, think about some big ideas related to what you will want to write about. Identify broad themes relevant to your industry and audience.
For each content bucket/category page, you can identify a target keyword. Keyword research can help you name your content buckets. For example, maybe you identified a content bucket as Marketing. Keyword research might tell you that Marketing Tips or Marketing Strategies is a better keyword to target.
I’ll use myself as an example! These are my content categories:
I’m specialized as a blog writer, so I write a lot of content about blogging and SEO. I sometimes give more generic business tips, which fall under Entrepreneurship. I plan to write more blogs under Community to feature other businesses I’ve worked with.
You don’t have to overthink your content buckets. Start with a few big ideas based on the content you already have. You can change your categories later on if needed.
Depending on your business and niche, I recommend 3-5 content buckets. They should be broad enough to cover the majority of your blogs. Some industries (recipe development, finance, tech, etc.) may require more content buckets.
Yes! Review and update your buckets based on audience feedback, industry trends, and changes in your business goals. Audit them once a year to ensure they still align with your business goals.
