8 SEO Hacks to Avoid to See Actual Growth

SEO

I honestly feel bad for business owners who fall for these SEO hacks that promise quick results. They often don’t know any better because SEO can feel confusing and technical, so they follow the advice they hear. I just want to protect them!

I did it too when I didn’t know anything about SEO, and it hurt my website and business growth.

What I’ve learned is that the long, strategic route is the fastest way to real results.

So please stop with these “strategies”, if you can even call them that.

seo shortcuts to avoid

1. Ignoring Search Intent

Targeting a keyword just because it has high volume, without understanding why someone is searching for it, leads to mismatched content and high bounce rates. Rankings drop when users don’t find what they need.

Read more about search intent.

2. Buying Backlinks

Buying followers on Instagram only hurts your growth in the long run. These aren’t quality backlinks—they’re usually list websites or something sketchy like that. It might boost your numbers temporarily, but low-quality or spammy backlinks can cause penalties and tank your rankings.

Don’t waste your money. Here’s how you can build a backlink strategy that works.

3. Using AI-Generated Content to be Able to Post More

Ugh… AI-generated content… It’s always generic, duplicated, or inaccurate. And all of those can lead to diminished trust with search engines and your audience.

Content isn’t a numbers game—it’s all about value.

If you can only write and publish one blog a month, that’s super valuable, DO IT! That’s so much better than publishing four blogs in a month that AI wrote for you.

My thoughts on AI, if you’re curious.

4. Keyword Stuffing

Over-optimizing content with keywords might feel strategic, but it hurts readability and signals low quality to search engines. Today’s algorithms prioritize natural language, not repetition.

While keyword placement is still important, don’t use keywords unnaturally throughout your content. It just reads and feels super weird.

5. Duplicate Content

Copying or reusing content across multiple pages confuses search engines and hurts your ranking potential.

And before you think it, running a blog through AI tools to make it “look different” is still duplication. Search engines are better at spotting patterns than people think.

6. Inflating Word Count for Rankings

Word count literally does not matter. Don’t make a blog super long but fluffy just because you think higher word count is a ranking factor. It’s not.

Search engines care about value. Long blogs typically provide more value, so they naturally rank higher. But a short, valuable blog can rank just as highly if it answers a specific question.

Don’t worry about word count—worry about value.

7. Writing for Algorithms Instead of Humans

Yes, algorithms matter. You can’t get website traffic without playing the SEO game and optimizing your content for search engines.

But HUMANS are the ones reading your posts. They’re the ones who are learning something from you and joining your email list and inquiring about your services, not search engines.

Always write for humans first and optimize for search engines second.

8. Using Clickbait Headlines

Clickbait headlines that don’t deliver need to die. Not only is it super annoying for readers, but a high click-through-rate with poor engagement tells search engines your content isn’t satisfying the query, and your rankings will drop.

SEO Strategies That Build Trust

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather spend my time on marketing strategies that help me BUILD trust with my audience. That’s how you win long-term.

Strategies like:

  • Consistent, high-quality content about topics your audience is interested in
  • Engaging with your audience authentically
  • SEO with a focus on value
  • Thoughtful community building
  • Creating a cohesive customer journey and experience

It might take you more time, but the payoff is so much sweeter.

Stop With the SEO Hacks

Stop taking shortcuts and start building trust with your audience so they can see that you actually want to help them, not just take their money.

Long-term SEO strategies will help your business grow. Invest your time, energy, and money into that, and the ROI will be much better than the short-term gratification you might feel now.

P.S. If you’re working with someone for SEO and they’re doing any of these things, it’s time to find someone new.

FAQs About SEO Hacks

Why do these SEO “hacks” still get recommended?

Because they used to work. SEO advice lags behind algorithm updates, and many marketers are still selling outdated strategies that no longer deliver results.

What’s the difference between strategic SEO and spammy tactics?

Strategic SEO focuses on user intent, quality content, and long-term authority. Spammy tactics focus on manipulating rankings quickly, often at the expense of user experience and credibility.

How can I tell if my current SEO strategy is hurting me?

Look for warning signs such as declining traffic, low engagement, high bounce rates, or a lot of content that never ranks. If you’re producing a lot but seeing little return, something’s off.

What should I focus on instead of SEO shortcuts?

Focus on content that actually answers questions, aligns with search intent, and supports your offers. Pair that with a solid technical foundation and a consistent strategy.

How long does it take to see real SEO results?

Typically, 3–6 months for traction, and 6–12+ months for meaningful results. SEO compounds, but only if you’re doing it right.

Can bad SEO tactics be fixed?

Yes, but it may take time. Cleaning up backlinks, consolidating content, and improving quality can recover performance, but rebuilding trust with search engines isn’t instant.
