How to Repurpose Content to Maximize Your Time and Energy

Entrepreneurship

Updated August 2025

Since becoming a business owner, I’ve learned how to repurpose content across platforms, and let me tell you – it’s a game-changer. It’s saved me so much time and energy.

Constantly creating content is exhausting and creatively draining. Repurposing what you’ve already created isn’t cutting corners, but a smart content strategy.

I talked to Hayleigh on the Employee to Boss podcast about staying consistent with your blog and how to repurpose content. Take a listen!

Key Takeaways:

  • What does it mean to repurpose content?
  • Some benefits of using content you already have
  • How to repurpose your content
  • Mistakes to avoid

What Does it Mean to Repurpose Content?

Repurposing content is the process of taking one piece of created content and using it in different ways.

Typically, people start with a video, blog, or podcast. The one they pick depends on their comfort level. Some people hate being on video, don’t think they are good writers, or don’t like the sound of their voice. Choose to start with the one you’re most comfortable with.

Whichever you decide to start with, you can then use it to create pieces of content that can be used in other ways.

The Core Benefits of Repurposing Content

Repurposing existing content saves your time and energy. You aren’t constantly creating new content from scratch. You’re using what you already have in different ways or on different platforms.

It actually improves brand consistency because your core messages are clear and repeated. People know what to expect from your content.

When you adapt content for different platforms and formats, you could reach new audiences. Maybe some people respond to blogs, while others prefer Instagram Reels. Even though it’s the same content, it’s reaching different people by being repurposed.

How to Repurpose Content

How do you go about repurposing content without overusing content?

Because yes, that’s a thing!

You can wear out content if you repurpose it too much.

So follow this strategy to make the most of your content without talking about the same thing over and over again!

Identify Your Best Content to Repurpose

Look at your analytics and find high-performing blogs, videos, or social posts. It indicates that your audience resonated with the content and liked what you had to say. They’ll probably like it in other formats or on other platforms, too.

Choose New Formats for Existing Content

Think about what makes the most sense for the content you have.

  • Blog post → Infographic, social carousel, or short video.
  • Podcast episode → Blog recap, key quotes for Instagram, or email.
  • Webinar → Series of short educational clips, email, or freebie.
  • Email newsletter → LinkedIn article, Reel, or blog post.

Also think about the platforms your audience is on. If they don’t spend much time on YouTube, there’s no point in creating YouTube videos.

But if they love reading emails, maybe more of your content could be turned into emails.

Adapt, Don’t Just Copy

When you repurpose content, you shouldn’t copy and paste content.

Example: Don’t paste an entire blog into an email. It needs to be adjusted for the platform.

Update visuals, design, and text to fit the new format. Change the tone and style for each channel because people expect different things on different platforms.

I expect Instagram to be more personal, while blogs more educational.

Automate and Batch the Process

Use tools like Canva, Descript, or scheduling platforms like Tailwind to speed up repurposing. If you get into the weeds, repurposing content can take just as long as creating something new.

Batch repurposing in one sitting to create tons of content and schedule it out a few weeks or months in advance.

Make sure to keep track of the content you’ve repurposed so you don’t accidentally reuse it too much! I recommend using Airtable!

How I Repurpose Blog Content

Blogging is one of my main marketing channels. Everything else I create stems from my blog strategy.

I promote my new blogs in my email list every week.

I turn some list blogs into Instagram carousels and I share what’s coming up on my blog.

I use some blog topics as guest podcast pitches.

My Pinterest manager uses my blogs to create pins.

My one blog might take a few hours to create, but it saves so much time when creating this other content. There are tons of ways to take one blog and turn it into tons of other content.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don’t waste your time repurposing content that isn’t relevant to your business anymore. You don’t have to repurpose content that’s low-performing either.

Be careful about overloading your audience with the same message all the time. Intermix your topics to educate your audience so you don’t talk about the same thing all the time.

Follow platform best practices when repurposing content. Just because it started as a blog, doesn’t mean you can’t change the content to fit an Instagram post.

Start Repurposing Content Today

I bet you have tons of content you can repurpose sitting on your website, social media accounts, or Google Drive. Go through what you have and see what you can repurpose.

One piece of content, whether that’s a video, blog, or podcast, can turn into so many different things.

Try repurposing your current content and create a strategy to create less content but use it in many ways. See how much time and energy you save by doing so!

FAQs About Repurposing Content

Is repurposing content illegal?

Nope, as long as you create the original content. You can’t repurpose and use someone else’s content without their express permission.

Which content should you republish?

If you’ve made major updates to blogs, you can republish them with the same URL (that’s what I did for this blog!) I originally wrote it in 2020 but updated it in 2025, so I updated the publish date.

What is the process of repurposing?

Find the best content to repurpose, choose a new format for the content, adapt it for the platform or format, and batch create.
