8 Benefits of a Blog Strategy for Small Business Owners

Blogging

Do you have a blog strategy or a blog in general? If not, it’s time to hop on the bandwagon! There are SO many benefits of a blog strategy for entrepreneurs. Blogging is a powerful tool that improves website visibility, lead generation, and client engagement. Any business can start a blog and see these benefits, even if you’re a solopreneur! So what are these so-called benefits of a blog, you say?

1. Improve Keyword Rankings

A blog will help improve your keyword rankings. Each page on your website should only target one keyword, so you can only do so much with your main pages (home, services, contact, etc.) A blog gives you endless opportunities to target and rank for other keywords related to your business.

Blog keywords are typically more niche, too. Your home page probably targets a generalized term related to what you do. For example, my home page keyword is ‘blog writer’ but this blog allows me to rank for ‘benefits of a blog’. It’s more specific and gives me a higher chance of ranking for it. I wouldn’t want to target ‘benefits of a blog’ as my homepage keyword because it’s too specific to what I do, but it’s perfect for a blog keyword.

With a consistent blog, you’ll start to rank for more keywords and be listed higher in search results for those keywords. The more keywords you rank for, the more Google understands your business and when to show it in search results.

2. Content to Repurpose

Who loves doing less work but has more content? 🙋‍♀️ I know I do! Long-form content like blogs gives you tons of content to repurpose on other platforms. I repurpose my blog content for my weekly emails and social content. From one blog, you can create hundreds of other pieces of content, like:

  • Podcast episode (and show notes)
  • Guest podcast pitch
  • Social:
    • YouTube videos
    • Reels
    • TikTok
    • YouTube shorts
    • Instagram stories
    • Carousel or static posts
  • Infographic
  • Email (maybe multiple)
  • Webinar
  • Freebie

There’s so much you can do with just one blog! You have to be strategic in how you repurpose content, though. You don’t want your audience to get sick of seeing the same thing over and over. Spread it out using scheduling platforms

how to keep track of blog ideas

Also, make the content unique to the platform and what you want to achieve from the content. Don’t copy/paste your blog content into an email, otherwise, why would they click the link back to your website to read the post? Give them a snippet and include the link to read the rest.

3. Educate Your Audience

A blog is a chance to educate your audience about topics related to your services. You can teach them something new, keep them updated on trends in the industry, and explain why they need your services.

Write about topics important to your audience. These are some of my favorite ways to educate audiences:

  • Step-by-step guides
  • Actionable tips
  • Tutorials
  • FAQs

4. Establish Credibility

Blogs show off your areas of expertise. Writing informative, valuable, and comprehensive blogs prove to your audience and search engines that you know what you’re talking about. You earn a competitive advantage when you portray yourself as an expert in your industry. People will start to know, like, and trust you.

As a blog writer, I use my blog as my portfolio for new clients. I write everything published on my blog so clients can see examples of my writing for themselves. (Although, I write in their tone and style, of course!) I also write about topics my audience is interested in learning more about, therefore, educating them and establishing my expertise.

5. Expand Brand Visibility

Every time you publish a new page on your website, Google recrawls your website. Crawling means it analyzes your website and each page to learn what it’s about. Posting consistently to a blog forces search engines to crawl your website often, which indicates you’re an active website. Google wants to show websites in search results that are active because no one wants out-of-date information! Publishing new content consistently is so important and will help you earn more visibility for your website.

6. Engage Clients

A blog can help you start and engage your community. You can use a blog to engage with clients and understand their needs. Encourage them to leave comments, feedback, and questions to further understand their problems and how your solution can help them. Their feedback might even inspire future blog posts!

7. Improve Lead Generation

A blog is part of a larger marketing strategy to earn new leads. Not only are you attracting more qualified leads from the keywords you select, but a blog can help convert them into clients. Always include a call-to-action (CTA) in your blog to encourage them to take further action. Here are some examples:

You can include other CTAs throughout the blog, too, to continue their engagement on your website. This includes links to related blogs, services, freebies, affiliate links, and more. Whatever you have, that will enhance their experience.

8. Affiliate Opportunities

Are you an affiliate of other companies? A blog is a great place to include your affiliate links. You have two options:

Featured Blog: Write a blog solely to promote your affiliate link. For example, write a blog about a coaching program you were a part of and offer your affiliate link for others to join.

Included in Blogs: Include your affiliate links in blogs where the company is naturally mentioned. For example, write a blog about the top tools you use for your business, and offer your affiliate links.

And you can do both options! I typically opt for option #2 because it feels more natural to link it when the company happens to be mentioned. Whatever you choose, don’t be spammy. Your goal should always be to provide value to your audience, not make a quick sale (but those are nice, too.)

And, ya know, since I’m here… These are the companies I have affiliates for. When selecting affiliates, think about companies you actually use and would recommend to your clients.

There are so many benefits of a blog strategy for small business owners. If you don’t have a blog, it’s time to start one. Just remember that when you do, you need to be consistent with posting. That’s the only way you’ll reap the benefits of a blog. Need help staying consistent and writing informative posts? Explore my blog writing services and contact me to schedule a free discovery call!
