If you aren’t writing evergreen blog content, you could be missing out on a huge opportunity down the road.

Evergreen content means it stays relevant even years later. Whether someone reads it one day or five years after it’s published, the content is relevant.

It’s something I think every business owner should be implementing in their content strategy. Trendy topics are fun and are quick wins, but content that grows over time wins in my book.

You’ll get consistent traffic, higher ROI, and stronger brand authority. And I think that’s worth using to your advantage.

Evergreen content stays relevant long after it’s been published. It’s something people can read years later, and the content is still relevant and applicable.

Here are some examples of good evergreen blog content:

  • Best practices (although this may need to be updated every once in a while)
  • Industry fundamentals
  • How-to guides, step-by-step walkthroughs, or demos

It continues to drive traffic to your website without requiring constant content creation or updates. 

You’ll probably have to make updates every once in a while, but with evergreen blog content, you won’t have to do it all the time.

There are a few differences between evergreen and trendy topics.

  • Evergreen: Traffic compounds over time. The content will still be relevant years later. It doesn’t require frequent updates.
  • Trendy: You’ll probably see a lot of traffic quickly, but it will die off. The content is hot right now, but will be forgotten. It would require frequent updates or might not be relevant for long.

I think there are times for both types of blog content. A mix of both is good, but you should prioritize creating evergreen content, especially if you’re new to blogging.

You’re making the most out of your time (because we all know it takes a lot of time to write just one blog post!) You’re putting in the effort now, and it continues to pay off over time.

You’ll see long-term traffic growth. People continue to find the content valuable, which encourages search engines to send more traffic to the page.

Evergreen blogs position your brand as a reliable knowledge source. It continues to build your authority in the online community.

They also support lead generation goals. Constant traffic to the blog leads to more consistent inquiries and sales.

Every business owner should have several evergreen blogs on their website.

How to Identify Evergreen Blog Topics

But how in the world do we think of that many blog topics?! Thinking of topic ideas is the hardest part (even for me).

Here are a few tips:

  • Research common problems and frequently asked questions in your niche.
  • Use keyword tools to find topics with steady search volume.
  • Look for timeless concepts (fundamentals, step-by-step processes, ultimate guides, etc.)
  • Repurpose top-performing content into evergreen formats.

These formats tend to work well for evergreen blogs:

  • Step-by-step tutorials
  • FAQs and “ultimate” guides
  • Glossaries of industry terms
  • Case studies with timeless takeaways
  • Product/service comparisons (non-time-sensitive)
  • Checklists and templates

Don’t overthink it. I actually find that evergreen blog topics are easier to find than trendy topics. I’m not usually one to hop on trends and usually miss them 😝

Now, let’s talk about actually writing your evergreen blogs. To make them truly evergreen with very few edits needed in the future, follow these tips:

Choose a Timeless Angle 

Avoid dates in the title or URL slug. You’ll constantly have to update blogs if they’re titled “SEO Best Practices in 2025.”

I would also avoid including statistics that change all the time. Not only are updated stats very manual to keep track of, but they’re also annoying to fix in blogs. 

Prioritize Depth Over Newsworthiness

A comprehensive guide will typically perform better in search results than quick updates. Google wants you to have the best content about a specific topic. Longer blogs with more information will earn more traffic over time.

Make It Skimmable

Keep people on the page as long as you can, and that means the content needs to be skimmable. 

We hope someone reads every word on the page, but the reality is that they don’t. They read the subheadings, bullet points, and text that stand out. Include those formats in your evergreen blogs.

Incorporate Strong SEO Foundations

Even with AI in search, SEO foundations are still the same. Long-tail keywords that answer people’s questions are winning.

Your goal with evergreen content is to provide value. Naturally, including keywords and answering questions will earn you more traffic.

Writing enticing metadata for each blog also helps get people actually to click on the link from search results.

Include Examples and Use Cases

Concrete details improve relevance. Use cases don’t have to include dates, but even if they do, I don’t think it matters as long as the example is still relevant.

Update When Needed

All blogs will need an update eventually. New best practices come into play all the time, and it’s important to keep your blogs relevant.

Here are some ways to update your older blogs:

  • Refresh outdated links or fix broken ones
  • Update screenshots or images
  • Include new internal links
  • Adjust formatting
  • Improve skimmability
  • Add new content

The great thing about evergreen blog content is that you can promote and repurpose it on other platforms over and over again!

  • Share on social media and Pinterest at regular intervals (schedule re-shares).
  • Link in email newsletters as a featured resource.
  • Include it in lead magnets or free resources.
  • Cross-link from newer blog posts.

Since the content doesn’t go out of style, you can repurpose it in several different ways, making the most of your content creation efforts.

It’s important to track how well your evergreen content is performing and make tweaks where necessary.

Use analytics platforms like Google Analytics and Google Search Console to track metrics like:

  • Keyword rankings
  • Engagement rate
  • Traffic over time

Set a bi-annual reminder to review your blogs and refresh them if needed. Keeping them up-to-date will ensure they remain evergreen and in top positions in search results!
