7 Copywriting Tips to Make Your Blogs Interesting to Read

Blogging

Your blog is boring. There. I said it.

I’ve read so many blogs that are straight-up painful to read. Actually, I wouldn’t know. I didn’t read the whole thing. If you find your blogs to have high bounce rates or little traffic, it’s time to switch up your strategy.

Your blog needs to be informative, but it doesn’t have to be (and shouldn’t be) in the essay-style format you were taught in school. It can be fun and engaging, but still useful! Let’s chat about a few copywriting tips to make your blogs interesting to read.

1. Keep your words and content simple.

Have you ever seen people use big words just for the sake of using big words? News flash: it doesn’t make you sound smarter. It just confuses your audience (unless your audience is of the uber-smart variety, then ignore me).

But I’m guessing most of us are speaking to the average person who might not know what Sesquipedalian means (it’s a lover of long words 🤓). Simplify your words and content to make it easy to read and understand. Your main goal is to impress the readers with your knowledge on a topic AND write it in a way they understand. You don’t need to search for synonyms for a simple word just to make yourself sound smarter. The quality of your content is what matters most!

2. Speak to your audience.

Your content should speak to your audience’s struggles, values, needs, wants, and goals. Your blog page can be used for lead generation because you’re showing your expertise on certain topics, and the right people will want to work with you after reading your blogs! When you focus on speaking to your specific audience, it’s super clear who you are targeting.

There’s no chance your female business owners aged 30-55 in the health and wellness industry will be confused with 60-year-old male truck drivers. Dramatic example, but you get the point.

Before writing an article, have an idea of who you want to read it, what they could be struggling with, and how you can help them, which leads me to my next point.

3. Keep SEO in mind.

I know SEO can be confusing but think of it as a way to reach your target audience. You’re optimizing your blog, so it’s easier to find when searching on Google. When writing your article, optimize for SEO by:

  • Researching and using target keywords
  • Writing a keyword-rich SEO title and meta description
  • Using headers
  • Including images with alt text
  • Add links to other relevant content
  • Include a call-to-action (CTA)

When Google sees that you’re constantly updating your website with new and valuable content, it will rank you higher in search results. That means you’re reaching even more of your ideal audience! Writing a blog does take some thought. You can’t just throw words on a page and be done (but wouldn’t that be nice?!), so take the time to make it a quality article people will want to read.

4. Include your personality.

Your blogs will be the most fun to read when you include your personality in your writing! Don’t be afraid to add emojis, jokes, or opinions. It doesn’t have to be serious all the time (unless that is your personality 😉).

I like to add my personality to blogs by speaking conversationally. The language I write with is the same language I speak with. It builds brand familiarity if someone is first introduced to me on Instagram or my blog, then meets me over video for a discovery call. It creates a genuine brand experience for your audience.

I’m also bubbly, so I like to include emojis, cheesy jokes, and puns in my writing. You don’t have to do this to make your writing interesting to read, but adding parts of your personality allows the reader to see through the screen to the person behind it.

5. Make the content skimmable.

Most readers won’t read every word on your blog. I know, it’s heartbreaking to think about all the time and effort you put into a blog only to have people skim through it. You may even do it yourself! I know I do…

It’s important to make your content skimmable for the majority who take a few seconds to absorb your article. You can do this by making your headers specific and keyword-rich. When I skim content, I’ll probably only read the headers and sometimes the first few sentences. The header quality is what will entice (or not) the person to read the paragraphs under them.

The blog, for example, is a list blog. The title lets you know what you can expect from the article, and each subheader (AKA the numbers) allows you to skim for a quick understanding of how to make your content interesting for readers. Then, if you’re interested in learning more, you can read the paragraphs under the headers. But the blog also makes sense by just reading the headers. Someone can get a general idea of how to make their content more interesting and move on with their day.

6. Take the reader on a journey.

A story format is one of the most engaging ways to write content. It quickly draws a reader in and captivates their attention until they’re at the end and didn’t realize they spent the last 10 minutes reading your article.

Stories take the reader on a journey. There are highs and lows, challenges and wins along the way. You want to include pieces in the story your audience can relate to to establish an emotional tie to them and the story. It’s a fantastic way to keep a reader engaged with your content.

Although storytelling is an amazing copywriting tool, it doesn’t fit with every piece of content. I created this blog as a list. It doesn’t really make sense for me to create an entire story when I’m giving you small, digestible tips.

However, you definitely could write a blog about how you became an entrepreneur or share a case study from a client experience in story format. These are great ways to utilize storytelling!

7. Give them a reason to come back for more.

Once you hook a lead, don’t let them go! Give them a reason to come back for more of your content. This can be an enticing call to action at the bottom (which you should always have anyway) that links to other articles, freebies, or your services page.

One idea I like is doing a blog series. Start with a big idea and break it down into multiple blog posts. This makes people want to come back to your blog to read the next part of the series when it’s published.

You may also want to have a form for people to sign up for your email list. Again, the goal is for them to come back to you and/or your website for more content from you. Getting them on your email list gives you a better opportunity to connect with them.

Your blog doesn’t have to be boring. You can switch up your language to be more personal and conversational and by reaching the right audience, you’ll have a better response to your content.
